Constructing Participatory Spaces: Involving Citizens into the Urban Development Planning from the View of Planners
Beránková, Petra Alexandra ; Mička, Pavel (advisor) ; Veselý, Arnošt (referee)
The work deals with constructing of participatory spaces in the process of urban development planning. The topic of involving citizens into planning is viewed from the point of planners. A concept of participation in this text is conceived in the sense of invented spaces built from above. The research perspective is an interpretative one, anchored in the constructivist epistemology. Therefore the main question is: How do planners reflect involving citizens in the planning? Firstly, the authoress demonstrates the importance of her topic by putting it into the context of wider social dynamics related to the crises of representative democracy and emerging of sub-politics. She reveals that the trend of building participatory opportunities is strengthening. The important question is formulated: How is the role of public in the strategic planning constructed? On the base of analytical induction of semi-structured interviews with planners, the authoress creates her own typology of ideal-type approaches to participation. These types of approaches came out from a distinction of the extent and the aim of spaces of participation. The involvement of citizens can be seen either as building of community, activation of elites, mapping of public preferences or as consultation with local experts.

Vliv fortifikací na utváření a vývoj našich měst
Zíka, Vratislav
The founding of the vast majority of cities in the Czech Republic is closely related to the extent and form of their fortifications. For centuries, city walls were a determining force in urbanism, and in many cities their influence is still evident and valid today. This paper summarizes the key principles of the development of urban structures in relation to city fortifications and outlines possible lessons learned from them, which could be applied to current urban planning. The area-based constraint on city development in the past has led to qualitative development of the built-up within the walled area. An important role was played primarily by privileges that supported the economy within the walls. Perhaps such measures could be used for the development of selected areas within present-day cities as well.

Romanisation of Britain
Bělohoubková, Dana ; Musil, Jiří (advisor) ; Titz, Pavel (referee)
This work is dealing with romanisation of Britain. In the first part, the situation before Roman conquest of Britain is outlined. Further, I've tried to depict the process of invasion with accent on the policy of Romans toward the tribes. The second part of the work is dealing with the romanisation itself. We can observe this process for example on creation and development of towns, material culture, and transformation of religion. In the conclusion, I've tried to assess this factors and their part in this process.
Chytrá a udržitelná města v kontextu vědecké a inovační strategie EU
Horniecká, Marie ; Žamberský, Pavel (advisor) ; Procházková Ilinitchi, Cristina (referee)
The thesis explores how the EU support to research and innovation towards urban sustainability is designed, what the existing EU intiatives striving for achieving smart and sustainable cities are. The analysis of theoretical approaches forms the basis for developing the definition of smart and sustainable city for the purpose of this thesis. An overview of the principal EU strategic documents which address urban sustainability together with European networks is provided in order to demonstrate the linkage to the research Framework Programmes. A separate chapter is devoted to the analysis of the most pressing challenges European cities face nowadays. Database of EU funded research and innovation calls and projects is examined (E-CORDA). Calls and projects related to urban areas are identified and juxtaposed with the urban problems. Final recommendations concern with social aspects of sustainability which should be, in the author's opinion, addressed in future EU research Framework Programmes with a particular attention.
Inventory of urban planning before and now
Bureš, David
The search for parallels in the advancement of urban strategies concerning development and revitalization of the city center during the last 100 years. Topical studying of Rozštlapil's concepts for the localities which have not been satisfyingly planned yet show a similarity to the situation in which the center of Brno found itself a hundred years ago. The construction activity in the historical parts does not have a clear and strong urban-planning concept. Only small parcels are dealt with, without any more profound relation to the territorial unit. Every construction intention in the city conservation areas is assessed anxiously, the important points of view for a global strategy of future development are still missing. Controversial interventions are carried out, contaminating the city forever. Unlike the generation of architects from the beginning of the 20th century, there is a lack of laws controlling the construction in city centers. A continual will of the city representation is absent and so is a vision of any type. Based on the presently available possibilities and needs, the students of the master degree program at FA VUT Brno are dealing with a parallel vision for a concept of construction in the city center. The content of a four-semester work called „Inventura stavění v městské památkové rezervaci“ is a verification and analysis of hidden reserves in the modern city structure. The indication of possibilities of architectural interventions into the historical structure of the center as well as the courage of Václav Rozštlapil's concepts may reach many, not only the architectonic public.
Rozvoj měst v Aleppu
Touchan, Shourouk
Syria is one of this example. The country located in a region which considered to be the place of the birth of urban development, with a history of more than 5000 years. Syria, a central organized state, supports in particular the two metropolis Damascus & Aleppo. It is difficult to find a city like Aleppo in which economical and architectural activities joined together for thousands of years. Aleppo was conquered by many civilizations which left their traces in the urban and architectural character of the city. Aleppo was inhibited by different nationalities that belong to three religions. They lived harmoniously with each other and cooperated to improve living conditions. The City was always able to keep in touch with the external world. It both influenced it and was influenced by it. This is due to the ability of its population to communicate with it.
